The National Gallery

The National Gallery (often abbreviated as NG) is an art museum in Trafalgar Square in Central London. Founded in 1824, it is one of the world’s greatest and oldest art galleries. The gallery covers an area of 46,396 square metres, housing a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to the early 20th century. As the world’s leading gallery, its collection covers the best paintings and bequests of the great masters, encyclopedic in scope, like Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Titian, Velázquez, Monet and Van Gogh. Having around 6 million international visitors and domestic visitors from Britain, the National Gallery ranked eighth on the list of most-visited art museums (2020) in the world. Now, the National Gallery is rapidly approaching a key moment – its 200th anniversary in 2024, with more celebration events in progress, engaging new generations of visitors.
